ADULT STABILITY AND STRENGTH CLASSES

  • Postural exercises
  • Back rehabilitation
  • Injury prevention
  • Flexibility and strength

These classes help to correct muscle imbalances and identify and improve weaker areas of the body. These classes offer a low impact exercise that is executed with awareness and understanding of one’s body under the supervision of a qualified Biokineticist.
Our adult classes focus on core stability and strengthening, breathing, injury prevention, balance, flexibility and posture. Our group classes are small and structured to ensure adequate explanation and supervision by our Biokineticists.  Equipment such as gym balls, mats, free weights, balance pads, small balls and therabands are used in our sessions.

A common area of weakness among many of our clients is a lack of pelvic stability and deep core strength. Core strength refers to the tension in the muscles that attach to the lower back, pelvis and ribcage area. These muscles include the Transverse Abdominus, Multifidus and pelvic floor. The timing and correct activation of these muscles is important to enable optimal function in the correct sequence to provide adequate stability to the body. Core strength becomes vital during activities such as walking, running and weight lifting, as well as when transmitting forces from one part of the body to another, such as when lifting and carrying.
Poor posture is another common problem among adults who spend too many hours driving or sitting in front of a computer. Exercises offered in these classes focus on postural exercises to target upper back muscles, shoulder stabilisers, deep neck flexor activation as well as thoracic mobility and chest flexibility.

Bone density is another issue facing many adults as they age. Osteoporosis can significantly increase mortality risk through complications like hip fractures which lead to disability and subsequent health issues. Resistance exercises using free weights and therabands are taught in these classes to strengthen bones by placing stress and load on them, promoting additional bone growth and improving bone density.

Regular participation in these classes will ensure that you’re taking an active role in improving your quality of life, while also reducing your risk of injury.
