Pregnancy assessment
In the past doctors were concerned that physical activity might harm the growing baby and discouraged pregnant women from breaking a sweat. Researchers have now proven that prenatal inactivity - no exercise - puts moms-to-be and their babies at risk. For low-risk pregnancies, prenatal exercise is absolutely safe. Inactivity during pregnancy can make you more susceptible to excessive weight gain, high blood pressure, gestational diabetes and greater odds of a C-section. Therefore, there is plenty of incentive for moms-to-be to exercise! Exercise has also been shown to release the feel good hormones known as endorphins, which play a role in minimising the risk of postpartum depression.
Healthy Mom’s is a scientifically based fitness programme designed for the expectant and new mother. These classes offer a fun and safe way of keeping fit with other mothers in a professionally supervised environment. All moms’ are screened and assessed by qualified Biokineticists, pre-and post-natal, to monitor progress. The initial assessment includes pregnancy risk assessment, body fat percentage, pelvic stability and diastasis evaluation, cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance, as well as flexibility testing. Exercise sessions take place in a group, but one-on-one sessions are also available for those with specific needs or serious injuries. Therapeutic modalities include: resistance training, aqua therapy, cardiovascular exercise and Pilates classes. Strengthening exercises are implemented that address areas that are under stress, such as the upper and lower back, abdomen and pelvis. Weight gain is controlled with intermittent short bouts of cardiovascular activities such as pool walking, stationary cycling, arm ergometry and swimming.
Benefits of our Healthy Mom’s classes include improved posture, blood circulation, sense of wellbeing and overall energy levels. Participants will experience increased physical fitness and endurance during pregnancy as well as labour, and will improve their ability lose baby weight after giving birth.
